On this square you can see one of the first slave markets in Europe. The building was erected in the mid-15th century for the trade of slaves brought in from Africa.

Santa Maria Parish Church
On the other side of the square is another attraction you must visit when you go to Lagos. Built in the late 15th century, the church was extended in mid-16th century and repaired in the following century. Although it was damaged by the earthquake in 1755, the church remained standing, unlike the Church of Santa Maria da Graça which was completely destroyed.

Statue of Infante Dom Henrique
On the same square stands the Statue of Prince Henry the Navigator. Born in the late 14th century, Infante Dom Henrique was a major figure during the first phase of Portugal's Discoveries across the Atlantic and around the world.

Ponta da Bandeira Fortress
Next visit Ponta da Bandeira fortress, on Avenida dos Descobrimentos. Square-shaped, it was built after the Portuguese independence from Spanish rule was restored in the 17th century. It is one of the most beautiful buildings of its kind in the entire Algarve. Strategically positioned, its main purpose was to protect the city from attacks by pirates and privateers.

São Gonçalo Gate
On the other side of the avenue there is the beautiful gate of São Gonçalo. This is one of the gates of the city, built between the reigns of Dom Manuel I and Dom Filipe I and was erected at the same time as one of the walls for military and security purposes.

Centro Ciência Viva (Live Science Centre) of Lagos
Installed in an 18th century manor, the Live Science Centre is a museum dedicated to the Portuguese discoveries. In addition to the view of the riverfront, this museum offers families different exhibits and activities for children.

Take the museum's pedestrian access to the Municipal Market and enjoy the authenticity and simplicity of Lagos. Take the opportunity to buy fresh products such as fruit, vegetables, fish and seafood.

After visiting the museum, take your car and drive 2.5 km to the impressive Ponta da Piedade.
One of the most beautiful locations of the Algarve; the perfect place to take pictures of the beaches, the impressive cliffs and other rock formations, the lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean.

Caves
Venture out to explore some of the beautiful caves that can be found in this place. Take the steps carved into the hillsides down to the caves or, if you prefer, catch a sailing or fishing boat at the marina.
